How to Paint a Smoky Blend on a Dresser with Chalk Mineral Paint

Material list :

Transfer: Owl Adventures

I'm a sucker for the curvy shape of a Bombay Dresser, and for $10 it was a steal. I want to do a smokey blend on the front of this dresser, but this technique is great for using on any piece of furniture.

If you're looking for the easiest way to get a smokey blend on a dresser, this tutorial is for you! I'm going to show you how to blend up to 4 colors using Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint & the Best Dang Brush.

(P.S. You can always use less colors with this technique!)

Since the dresser has a shiny plastic veneer, I needed to use a good Bonding Primer to make my paint adhere. Without primer you'll risk your paint scratching off.

I used Dixie Belle's Bonding Boss Primer in "Clear" which takes 24 hours to dry. Once your primer is dry, it's time to paint!

Bonding Boss can make anything a paintable surface. Metal, glass, plastic, tile, ANYTHING!

Step #1

Choose your colors, using the darkest first. Paint your main color around the outer edge of your project.

I'm using Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint in the color "Coffee Bean" to frame out the dresser, leaving the center area for blending my lighter colors.

This is what it looked like after framing the outer edges with the color Coffee Bean.

Step #2

Pick up to 3 colors you want to blend in the center.

I picked the Chalk Mineral Paint colors Pine Cone, Dried Sage and Drop Cloth to highlight the center.

Using a clean Chip Brush, I randomly make little X's with each color in the center. I start with the color Pine Cone.

This is what it looked like after I painted on the color Pine Cone.

Next I add the color "Dried Sage", using a clean Chip Brush.

Below you can see I am slowly filling in the center with randomly placed color.

Last I add the color Drop Cloth to the center, focusing more paint in the very middle of the colors. NOW we're ready to blend.

Step #3 How to Blend Paint to get a Smoky Look

The key to blending paint for a smoky look? It's all in your brush! Dixie Belle's Best Dang Brush really lives up to its name.

The large handle is great for gripping and the large rounded top makes blending a breeze.

I start by misting the entire surface with water to get my paint ready for blending.

I start blending from the outside, working my way in using a circular motion. If your paint starts to feel dry, mist with more water, but not too much!

When it comes to DIY Furniture & Decor projects, there's a lot of choices. Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog. I hope you enjoyed it, and that you're inspired to try something new.
